Conservation database
This database attempts to provide valuable information about India's protected areas from an ecological, biophysical and socio-economic perspective. It is designed taking into consideration needs of several stakeholders. Easy searchability is achieved by categorizing information under ecological and conservation units. Biogeographic zones and biodiversity hotspots have been grouped under Ecological Units while the World Heritage sites have been included under Conservation Units.
Currently, this database has information on 55 protected areas within the Western Ghats which includes both textual information as well as maps. For each protected area, details like rainfall, altitude, year of establishment, vegetation type, species of flora and fauna, threats and NGOs active in each area are provided. This database will be updated, modified and refined on a regular basis.
